I am sooo sick and tried of ugly ass white girls cosplaying Amethyst. She is one of the few characters that POC aren’t shamed out of cosplaying as. These white girls who cosplay Amethyst probably realized they weren’t pretty enough to cosplay Pearl, Rose, Opal, or Rainbow Quartz, so they decided Amethyst would be just right, cuz to them big nose, big lips, and chubby=unattractive. And don’t give that “anybody can cosplay, no matter your race, size, or gender uwu” crap cuz that won’t stop the racist-ass, neckbeard fanboys from pissing about how you ruined their “waifu” just cuz your skin color is a bit darker.
This post isn’t even subtle in its racism, but best of all, it goes both ways. Sure, it goes on about “ugly ass white girls”, but when you look a little deeper, we find the real culprit.
If internalized racism is a thing, it’s right here in all its glory; Projected onto “white girls”.
See, I don’t think I’ve ever heard a white girl talk about big lips, big noses, or chubbiness as “black traits”. Hell, as far as I can tell, the body-positive movement is largely spearheaded by white women. So what we’re really looking at is a presumably-black woman berating her own features under a faulty guise.
This is self-hatred. Plain and simple. It is someone who feels so negatively about their own traits that they’ve decided that other people hate them. Whoever submitted this wants so badly to be offended or even oppressed that they took their own issues, and decided to make them about race; As though only black women can have “[a] big nose, big lips, and [be] chubby…”
This is no better than the “thin women can’t cosplay [so and so]” for no other reason than that the character is drawn chubby or fat. How fucking ridiculous is that? What if we told chubby people that they couldn’t cosplay thin or fit characters? What if we told black people that they couldn’t cosplay white characters? What if we disallowed gender-bent cosplay?
The fucking uproar would be fantastic.
