the concept of internalized misogyny is misogynistic as fuck.
friendly-neighborhood-patriarch:
it’s essentially saying that women can’t reason for themselves and that they are so easy to control that men can just easily make them believe what they want them to believe.
precisely.
Nothing is more misogynist than feminism.
Really though.
The whole idea is that women as a class need somebody to establish a doctrine of thought for them to follow or they will get taken advantage of.
It’s gross.
I agree mostly but what about internalized misogyny in the form of “I’m not like other girls!” “I’d rather hang with guys cos there is less drama!!” Or rejecting the color pink because of its association with femininity?
“I’m not like other girls” could be a reflection of discomfort with the perceived norm where girls are concerned, or it could be observational.
The thinker could literally have been watching the other girls, and have decided, “Although I have very little in common with these people, I hold them in the highest regard.” Still leads to the conclusion that the thinker is not “like” these “other girls”, but it holds no taint of hatred.
“I’d rather hang with guys cos there is less drama!!” could, again, be observational. A person saying this is not necessarily being hateful towards girls, but hating Becky and her tight-knit group of judgmental gossips is not hating women as a class.
It’s also possible that they may feel that the constant jockeying for social position that occurs in certain cliques of young women doesn’t have anything to offer them, and hold no malice or hatred towards those girls who do feel that there is something to gain from this behavior.
Rejecting things that are associated with the modern view of what “traditional” femininity is isn’t necessarily a rejection of women or girls, it could be a rejection of confining gender roles.
Now, if a girl is doing all of these things because she has specifically been taught, or decided that women are inferior, and this is her way of distancing herself from those she considers to be inferior, then that’s regular misogyny.
Nothing internalized about it.
The idea of internalized whatever hinges on the person who has done the internalizing being unaware of their own prejudices.
Again, if a person thinks that girls or women are all too stupid and easily led to make their own informed and self-aware choices about whatever issue, that is the real misogyny.
exactly, that’s what i meant.
