The most insulting thing, to me, about cis men playing trans women and cis women playing trans men is this:

It tells us that even when trans stories are told, y’all only see us as our gender designated at birth. As our anatomy.

A story about a trans woman is going to be interpreted as a story about a man in a dress if she’s being portrayed by someone that’s literally a man in a dress.

Audiences are going to think trans men are just really butch women if your story about a trans man stars a cis actress.

Enough people already see trans people as just cis people playing dress up (ESPECIALLY in the case of trans women).

If you cast a cis man as a trans woman or a cis woman as a trans man, congrats - you’ve just missed the entire fucking point of telling our stories.
