LITERALLY UGH.
I don’t want to write this post. The film industry has always been a mixed field, half cesspool, half brilliance, and overall a massive point for arguing. So what happens when you throw the LGBT+ community into the mix?
FLAME WARS.
In some cases, there have been brilliant movies created based around the trans community.
For example, About Ray.
About Ray:
Now, before we get our panties in a twist, I understand that the main character is portrayed by a cisgender woman, and a lot of the writers were cisgender and such. It does suck that a transboy actor wasn’t cast, as there are many out looking for work and aren’t cast in male roles simply because they are transgender. Though, this movie, along with the other good trans centered movies may open up many possibilities (as in, movies about transgender people that will be more likely to cast trans actors. Especially after Stonewall fell flat on it’s face…). We’ve already been seeing an uprising in the last few years, specifically 2015 and 2014 where transgender people are getting representation in the film industry.
From what I know, the movie doesn’t have a lot of incorrect information, and the entire situation especially regarding Ray’s father not signing the permission forms is all very real in a transgender person’s life. So, I think it’s a good thing. At least it’s not an abomination like that bloody ‘Stonewall’.

Stonewall:
UGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Need I say more?
If you’ve never heard of Stonewall, basically it was a monumental moment in LGBT history. The event’s full name is the ‘Stonewall Riots’, that involved members of the LGBT community demonstrating violent behavior and resistance against a police raid into a gay bar. Stonewall is said to be the biggest event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the US.
Basically, it is named Stonewall after the Stonewall Inn, which was a gay bar owned by the mafia. It was commonly inhabited by dragqueens, transgender people, effeminate young men, butch lesbians, male prostitutes, and homeless youth.
So, one day, these police come along and start clearing people out, arresting gay people, all that jazz. I think they even forced people to show them their genitals so they could see who was transgender.
Seriously, read the Wikipedia page here. It gets real super fast.
So why am I ugh-ing? Because this event was made into a film.
Good representation, right? NO.
In fact, the film is so shit that we (the LGBT community) boycotted it into the GROUND and guess how much money it raised?
LESS THAN ONE PERCENT OF IT’S ORIGINAL FUNDING LMAO (literally I laughed so hard when I found this out).
So why is this movie so shit?
Because one of the biggest events of Stonewall included a black drag queen throwing the first brick at police. (Her name was Marsha P. Johnson).
In the movie, the first person to throw a brick was a white cis man.
Boycott that shit. Also apparently the movie had other aspects that sucked, like the LIGHTING. Also, it’s the 1950′s. Why does the main look like half the kids at my school? (Only he’s actually attractive.) Shouldn’t he have a bowl cut?
Watch the trailer here: (It looks alright, but honestly, I’m not putting up with this shit. If you’re gonna represent the LGBT community, DO IT RIGHT.)
Her Story:
I’ve only heard good things about this film.
It was written by, directed by, and is starring trans women.
The trailer looks lovely, and I’m pretty excited to give it a look. Check it out:
Boy Meets Girl:
Another movie I don’t know too much about, and maybe that’s for the better, because this is another good film! Less about it means less things to complain about, right?
The main character is a transgender woman, and is portrayed by a transgender woman!
Take a look, it’s funny, romantic, and dramatic. Also, lesbian kissing! Yay!
Some honorable mentions include Orange is the New Black, for having transgender actors like Laverne Cox and Ruby Rose, and Sense8 for having Jamie Clayton who is a transgender actor. I’ll add more here if I remember to.
Also, the LGBT community spreads largely into the short film industry. I’ll leave you with this short film I quite enjoy: (About a transboy).
