On November 22nd, a citizen had called the 911 center. They had reported a “guy with a pistol” outside a city recreation center. What the officers weren’t told was that the gun had been fake. Rice had a pellet gun with the orange tip removed. There are reports that the police hadn’t given a warning before they had shot. The police department actually had reported that the police officers had given warning, but interviews didn’t back this up (CNN).
The gun next to Rice’s image is the gun that he had at the time of his death. The gun above that is the actual version of the pellet gun Rice had. Similarities could be found, the cops were not at fault for they had to make a decision within seconds.
What’s my opinion on this?
Can we take a minute to think why Tamir Rice had been pointing the fake gun at people in the 1st place? It’s an understatement to how reckless of a move that was. What makes it worse is that he had removed the orange tip. The thing is, Tanir Rice isn’t the first, nor the last to die because of this. 28 people are killed each year because they had carried and threated with guns similar to Tamir (rt.com). This isn’t a race issue, it’s a stupidity issue. Instead of having protests and riots, solve the problem at its core.
To prevent more innocent lives being lost to fake guns vs real guns, the Federal Law should adapt to the NY City Law.
RIP Tamir Rice, hopefully nothing like this happens ever again.
