Popplio Defense Squad
Reasons for being hated:
- Not as cool as Litten

- Doesn’t fit with the style of Alola.

People are allowed to like whichever starter they want to like, and I feel like this happens every generation, but one of the starters not appealing to you, on a personal level, does not make them bad. In fact part of the process of designing the starters is making sure that at least one starter will appeal to anyone. If all three starters appealed to a single demographic that’d threaten scaring off anyone else who might want to play, because they don’t have a starter they like. Like, I personally think Litten looks edgy and overrated, but Litten wasn’t designed for me, and I’m not so conceited that I’m gonna bash anyone who likes them.
The only argument I’ve ever seen against Popplio that doesn’t boil down to taste is the “doesn’t fit the style” thing, which is, weird? Because there’s never been a singular “style” to any region. Pokemon range from dogs to rocks to key rings to ballerinas to ice cream cones to ninjas. Saying a pokemon “doesn’t fit the style” of a region is like saying Captain America can’t lift Mjolnir; it might sound a little weird at first but there’s no law saying they can’t and when they do it turns out epic.
If we’re being totally real here, I feel like the reason so many people don’t like Popplio is that everyone is too cynical to admit they think a clown can be cute. You’re either afraid of them because clowns are an overused horror cliche or you’ve been taught to believe that clowns are for little kids, so you just can’t accept that a silly little sea lion can be good for you.
